3 Reasons to Avoid Tarp Pool Covers

Every swimming pool needs a good, reliable cover. A cover will help to keep debris out of the pool and can also keep children and pets from falling in. With that said, though, there are a lot of pool covers on the market today. Quality varies greatly among these covers. But, for the most part, there’s one type of pool cover you should avoid like the plague: tarp pool covers. Yes, these covers are cheap, but that’s about all they have going for them. In truth, there are many reasons that tarp pool covers just don’t cut it.

Reason #1: They Aren’t Built to Last

First of all, no matter how long a tarp pool cover claims it will last, chances are that you’ll only get two years of use out of it. And, honestly, that’s on the high end! Tarp covers, no matter how thick or well-made they are, are basically just tarps. This means they’ll eventually rip, tear, or get so wrinkled and creased that they’re hard to use. It’s better to spend more upfront and get a great, well-made cover than to have to replace tarp covers over and over again.

Reason #2: They Don’t Offer a Smooth, Sure Fit

If you’re imagining a smooth cover that fits over your pool perfectly, think again! Tarp covers are not custom designed to fit your pool. Instead, they just lie over the top and typically need to be weighted down. As you can imagine, this is quite an eyesore. Plus, not only do tarp covers look bad, but they’re notorious for coming undone and getting blown around by the wind. Thus, you’re much better off with a professional, properly secured cover that will stay in place and look attractive in the meantime.

Reason #3: They’re Not Safe

One of the main reasons to have a pool cover is to protect children and animals that stumble onto or try to walk across a covered pool. A good pool cover will hold firm and prevent falling into the water. Tarp pool covers, on the other hand, are not very good at holding weight and could pose a safety hazard to children or pets that walk across them.

As you can see, tarp covers really aren’t all that great, plain and simple. Thus, think twice before you buy one. You’re much better off opting for a more costly cover that’s better all around!
