How Storms Wreak Havoc On Your Pool

There are all kinds of dangers that can befall a swimming pool. However, one of the worst and most common risks is your basic summer storm. Sure, a storm might not seem like a big deal. But, in terms of what it can do to an improperly prepared pool, it’s major! Still not convinced? Just consider the risks.

A Major Mess

If you’re lucky, the worst thing a storm will do is make a big mess of your pool. Depending on the storm’s severity, you could find your pool full of tree limbs, leaves, and other general debris. If this happens, check to make sure that none of these objects have damaged the surface of your pool. Then, remove each and every one with care to avoid further issues.

Overfilling

A bad storm can fill your pool to the brim with water. That might not seem like a big deal. In fact, you might even be grateful for the “top off.” But, remember, too much water can throw your water chemistry out of whack. Thus, after heavy rainfall, check your chemical levels. If they’re not where they should be, then you may need to drain out some or, at the worst, even most of your pool water to get everything back in balance.

Fried Equipment

Your pool is able to stay clean and fresh thanks to things like your pump motor and your filtration system. Unfortunately, if lightning strikes these types of components in a storm, it could completely fry them, leaving your pool unprotected. For safety and peace of mind, cut the power supply to your pool at the first sign of a storm. If it’s too late for that, thoroughly check your equipment and make sure everything is still working properly before you dive back in.

Lost Accessories

When the wind gets strong, objects like your poolside grill, patio chairs, and more can get picked up and carried away. Thus, before a storm hits, weigh down or bring inside anything you can. Not only will this protect your most loved pool “extras,” but it will also keep them from falling into and damaging your pool or the surrounding structures.

Summer storms are magical in some ways, but very destructive in others, especially for pool owners. As such, do not take storm warnings lightly. Prep your pool for every possible storm, assess it for damage afterwards, and take care of any issues quickly for best results.
