How to Keep Your Pool Fade-Free

Have you ever seen a dingy, faded pool? Did it make you wonder if your pool (or future pool) would one day look the same way? Fading is a big and very real concern for most pool owners. And, to some degree, it’s inevitable. Fading just happens from being exposed to the sun and the great outdoors for years. However, there are things you can do to reduce the risk of fading and to lessen its severity.

Get the Right Pool

If you haven’t yet bought a pool, then you still have time to make a wise choice. And, as far as fading is concerned, the smartest choice you can make is a fiberglass pool. A quality fiberglass pool should fade much more slowly than most other pool options, especially if it is cared for properly. What’s more is that it tends to fade evenly, which makes it much less noticeable.

Keep Water Chemistry in Check

Whether you’re fortunate enough to choose a fiberglass pool or not, you’ll need to keep your pool water properly balanced. Not doing so can cause a host of problems, including faster fading. Be especially careful about too-high chlorine levels and improper pH levels.

Use a Pool Cover

Another smart thing you can do for your pool is to purchase a pool cover. Then, use this cover whenever the pool is not in use. When the cover is on, your pool’s surface is not exposed to direct sunlight, which causes fading over time. As an added bonus, your pool will also stay cleaner, which makes it easier to maintain.

Be Cautious with Cleaners

Finally, don’t just use any old cleaners on your pool. Many of them contain harsh chemicals that can cause fading, staining, and general damage to your pool’s surface. To be safe, use only quality products specifically made for your pool type. When trying a new product, you should also perform a small “spot test” to make sure it does not cause any damage or discoloration to your pool.

Fading does happen to every pool. But, you can slow down the extent and speed of the fading process by following these tips. Remember, the better you care for your pool, the better it will look!
