Swim and Splash Without Ruining Your Hair
When you own your own pool, you can swim every single day. And, while that might be good for your health and your stress level, it’s not always good for your hair. Chlorine can actually be quite damaging to your hair, despite how necessary it is for your pool. Don’t panic, however. You can still enjoy the water without ruining your tresses. You just have to know a few basic tips.
Wet Your Hair . . .
It might seem silly to wet your hair before going in the pool, but it’s actually smart. Wet hair is less absorbent than dry hair. Thus, when you jump in with your strands soaking wet, they’ll absorb less pool water and fewer of the pool chemicals that can do damage.
Or Keep it Dry
If you don’t want to show up at the pool with wet hair, there is an easy alternative. Avoid getting your hair wet while you’re in the water. It’s really not that hard if you tie it up in a bun atop your head or a high, looped ponytail. You can still splash and wade, all without worrying about damage to your hair. And, if you’re really concerned, bathing caps are an option too.
Use Some Oil
Another alternative for protecting your hair is to slather it with a hair-safe oil. The oil can keep the chlorine and other chemicals from deeply penetrating your hair. There are lots of options to choose from too. Opt for coconut oil, jojoba oil, or even good old olive oil.
Use Swimmers’ Shampoo
Hair protection shouldn’t end just because you get out of the water. In fact, post-swim is one of the best times to protect your hair and keep the damage at bay. Always thoroughly wash and condition your hair following a dip in the pool. For best results, use a shampoo specifically made for swimmers and that is designed to remove chlorine.
Swimming pools may not be all that hair-friendly. But, that doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying your daily swims. Instead, just follow these tips, and you can have the best of both worlds: relaxing pool time and gorgeous hair!
