What Factors Determine Proper Pool Elevation?

When installing a pool, all kinds of things have to be considered. These are often things you never would have thought about on your own. However, a good pool company will know all the important considerations, such as the correct elevation for your pool.

With that said, though, you should educate yourself on proper pool elevation (and more). That way, you can ensure your pool company is doing everything right and being as thorough as possible

Your Yard Plays a Role

First of all, know that there is no one “right” elevation for a pool to aspire to. A lot of factors come into play in determining the best elevation for a particular pool. Thus, it really does vary from one pool project to the next.

But, with that said, your yard or site matters a lot in that regard. If your yard is mostly flat, for example, your pool should only be around 3 to 4 inches lower than the top of your patio.

Things get trickier with a sloping site, however. And, while there may not be a standard in this situation, a good pool professional can discuss your best options for elevation and why. The “why” is super important because you want to make sure your pool professional has a good reason for placing your pool at a particular elevation. Listening to these reasons can let you know if your pool contractor is truly thinking about and planning for the installation in the way they should be.

Existing Structures

Also, bear in mind that, sometimes, structures already in your yard can affect the pool’s height. If you have a pre-existing patio, for example, it is going to play a big role in how elevated or not-so-elevated your pool can be. When this is the case, discuss the proposed elevation with your pool installer, and make sure you're both on the same page.

This is a good chance to see how well your contractor explains matters like these and how willing they are to listen to your input. Furthermore, it gives you the time to change up your current yard structure to match any elevation ideas of your own.

Ultimately, elevation doesn’t matter all that much unless you have a specific preference or potential drainage issues. What’s nice, however, is that if you talk about these and other issues with your pool company, it will tell you everything you need to know. You’ll either find out if you have a great company on your side or if you need to consider going in a different direction
